A majority of states across America have adopted strategies to promote more efficient consumption of energy. Recent data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) outlines those states which are making the biggest push to decrease energy usage.

Of the thirty states that have adopted energy efficiency policies (which may include mandated requirements, voluntary goals, or pilot programs) Texas stands out thanks to its leadership in becoming the first state with an Energy Efficiency Resource Standard (EERS), adopted back in 1999.

Energy Efficiency Resource Standards Explained

An Energy Efficiency Resource Standard (EERS) is a policy requiring utilities & electricity providers to achieve specified levels of savings across their customer bases. Typically, EERS objectives are percentage savings of electricity sales benchmarked over a historic period of time.

Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, and Ohio all created an EERS prior to 2008, and each state has extended it’s unique target beyond 2020.

Targeted electricity savings figures are different from state to state, ranging from 1.0% of prior year sales (in Michigan) to 2.1% of average sales over the prior three years (in Illinois).

New Hampshire became the latest state to adopt an EERS in August 2016, with a cumulative savings target of 3.1% of 2014 delivered electricity by 2020.

Financial incentives offered to customers to encourage less energy consumption

A trend that has been seen from coast-to-coast is the implementation of incentives and rebates for using less energy. While they vary based on location and utility, these incentives generally cover a portion of the cost of installing new commercial equipment (HVAC, lighting, etc) that consumes less energy.
